Bung Blob

Dry Fly · Egg · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gape competition/grub hook, 10-12
  • Thread Match foam / body 8/0

Materials

  • Buoyancy Bright closed-cell foam ('bung' head/back) (1 piece)
  • Body Fritz / blob chenille (orange, sunburst, pink or white) (1 length)
  • Tag (optional) Fluorescent straggle or ice dub (few turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a piece of bright buoyant foam at the front of the hook to form the visible 'bung' head/back, which both floats the fly and acts as a strike indicator.
  2. Run the thread to the bend and tie in the Fritz/blob chenille.
  3. Wind the blob chenille forward in touching turns to build a fat, buggy body up to the foam, brushing out the fibres.
  4. Fold or secure the foam back over and lock it down behind the eye with a few firm wraps.
  5. Whip finish and varnish the thread; trim the foam to a neat rounded head.
