How to tie it
Rear section: on a size 4 streamer hook (or a shank), start white thread and tie in a clump of white marabou about a shank length long for the tail, trimming the marabou to length before you tie it in. Leave a hook-eye's width of bare shank at the front. That spare room is what keeps the head from bulking when you tie off three materials there.
Tie in a white schlappen feather by the tip at the back along with a length of mono, then wrap medium silver UV Polar Chenille forward in touching turns. Matt picks this chenille because the core itself is silver-grey, so the whole body takes the colour, not just the fibres.
Palmer the schlappen forward to the head, sweeping the fibres back with each turn, then counter-wrap the mono through it. The mono is purely armour for a fragile schlappen stem. Tie off, whip finish, and brush the fly out to free anything the mono trapped. You have essentially tied a flashy Woolly Bugger.
Front section: mount a Gamakatsu B10S size 2. Run the mono through a couple of beads and back to the rear section's shank, lash it down hard, then double it over and lock it. Because the fish takes on the front hook, the rear connection only has to survive. It does not have to hook anything. Snug it but do not cinch it tight; the joint needs range of motion. Glue the wraps liberally.
Tie in a matching white marabou feather at the front, snipping the very tip out of the whole feather first so you are left with only the flowy fibres. Divvy it over the top of the articulation beads so it flows back into the tail and hides the joint.
Add mono, then wrap a wider, webbier schlappen at the front, two full turns rather than one, leaving the front 25% of the shank clear for the head. That thicker collar acts as a scaffold that props the marabou up so the fly keeps a profile in the water instead of collapsing.
Wrap a finer schlappen over that for two or three turns, sweep everything back and secure. Then dub Ice Dub top and bottom into split thread, pull it back and cinch it into a head, whip finish, add stick-on eyes and set them with UV resin filling the gap between. Snip the rear hook off with wire cutters. Optionally band the flat spot with red dubbing, or swap the stick-on eyes for dumbbells with Ice Dub stacked front and back for a weighted version.
