Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly (Mustad 94840) or 200R, 8-12
  • Thread to match body 6/0

Materials

  • Weight .020 lead wire (.025-.030 for deeper water) (8-10 wraps)
  • Body Medium chenille, yellow (or color of choice) (1)
  • Legs Medium round rubber hackle, two 1 7/8 inch pieces (2)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 8-10 turns of lead wire around the front third of the shank and lock it with thread. The nose-weight makes the fly dive head-first so the legs flail on the drop.
  2. Tie in medium chenille at the bend and wrap the thread forward.
  3. Figure-eight two lengths of round rubber at the one-third and two-thirds points of the shank, creating four legs per station.
  4. Wrap the chenille forward, wiggling it between the leg stations so all eight legs stand out to the sides.
  5. Tie off behind the eye, trim the legs to about 7/8 inch on a size 10, build a small tapered thread head, whip finish and cement.
