Bullet Head Hopper

Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL long dry-fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan or yellow material (Fine dubbing or foam strip)
  • Underwing Pale yellow d rib larva lace (Pinch of Antron)
  • Wing Mottled turkey / deer (Deer hair clump)
  • Bullet Head Natural deer (Butts of the wing clump)
  • Legs Yellow / barred rubber legs (One pair knotted rubber legs)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread at the 70% mark, running a base to the bend.
  2. Dub a plump tan body forward to the 65% mark, tapering slightly fatter toward the rear.
  3. Tie in a pinch of pale Antron underwing, then stack a clump of deer hair on top and bind it at the 65% mark with the tips reaching one shank length past the bend.
  4. Fold the forward butts rearward over the body and lock them at the 65% mark so they bunch into a bullet head.
  5. Figure-8 a pair of knotted rubber legs at the head tie-down so they kick out to each side.
  6. Build a neat thread collar behind the eye and whip finish.
  7. Trim the wing square just past the bend so the hopper sits flush in the film.
