Materials
Bead Slotted tungsten, matte black (1, sized to hook)
Tail Whiting Farms Coq de Leon tailing pack (6-8 fibres)
Body Remix Fly Co Sasquatch dub (sparse at tail, heavier at bead)
Rib Semperfli UV Buzzer Cheeks, small (1 strand)
Collar Semperfli Ice Dub, peacock (2-3 strands)
Hot spot Tying thread coloured red (3 in of thread)
Resin Loon Flow UV (1 drop)
How to tie it
Slide a matte black slotted tungsten bead onto a Moonlit ML056 barbless jig hook and start white Nano Silk behind it, building a small dam so the bead cannot shift later. The body tapers anyway, so the dam costs you nothing.
Pull six to eight Coq de Leon fibres from the tailing pack. To move them between hands, roll them across rather than re-gripping. That is what keeps the tips aligned.
Tie them in on top of the shank and bind back, stopping just before the bend. Go past it and the fibres dip downwards, which is a useful indicator that you have gone too far. Trim and discard the butts.
Tie in a strand of small UV Buzzer Cheeks for the rib.
Dub Sasquatch dub onto the thread, sparse where the body starts so the tail end stays slim, and build bulk as you work forward to the bead. Cover the thread right at the back.
This dubbing is hard to get wrong. It is buggy enough that a big clump still looks right, but trim the longest rear fibres out with scissors to taper it, since this is a small fly.
Rib the Buzzer Cheeks forward in even, loosely spaced wraps. Pull too hard and you stretch the material out; keep it just snug. Tie off behind the collar space and trim.
Dub two or three strands of Semperfli Ice Dub in peacock as a long thin noodle rather than a clump, so you get five or six wraps of collar instead of one or two. It holds better and you can control how it lays.
Whip finish between the Ice Dub and the bead. Strictly unnecessary, but it means the fly is finished and secure before the cosmetic collar goes on.
Colour about three inches of the thread with a red Sharpie and build a red hot spot collar behind the bead. Snip off and whip finish a second time.
Add a drop of Loon Flow (one of the thinnest UV resins, so it penetrates) give it a second, then cure.
