Buckskin Caddis

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL-2XL curved caddis/scud hook, 12-18
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Body Tan carapace (thin strip of buckskin or chamois leather)
  • Thorax/head Peacock or dark brown thorax dubbing (1-2 herls or dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and start thread, running it to the bend.
  2. Tie in a narrow pointed strip of soft tan buckskin or chamois at the bend by its tip.
  3. Wrap the thread forward to just behind the eye to make a smooth underbody.
  4. Wind the buckskin strip forward in overlapping turns to build a segmented, translucent larva body, stopping short of the eye, and tie off.
  5. Dub or wrap a small dark peacock or brown thorax/head at the front.
  6. Build a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
