Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 4X long streamer hook, #6-10
  • Thread Red A-plus / 3/0

Materials

  • Foam, 1/8 inch, cut into a 3/8 inch wide strip Red (also tied all black, or black with red segments) (One strip)
  • Rooster hackle Grizzly or brown hackle (Two feathers, one per segment)
  • Mylar / lateral scale flash Pearl flashabou (Two small clumps for the upright wings)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the 4X long streamer hook, run red thread all the way back to the bend, and cut a taper to a point on the end of the foam strip so it doesn't build a lump when you tie it in.
  2. Tie the pointed end of the foam down at the bend, using firm but not crushing wraps, this thread will cut thick foam if you honk down on it, and add a few wraps ahead of the tie-in point to keep the foam from twisting.
  3. Advance the thread to just ahead of the hook point, fold the foam forward over the shank and tie it down to form the first body segment.
  4. Tie in a large rooster hackle at the front of that segment, trimming a little off the underside of the stem so the concave side sits back, and wind three or four turns; tie off and clip.
  5. Advance the thread, fold the foam forward again and lock down the second segment.
  6. Tie in two small clumps of mylar lateral scale as upright wings, one clump at a time, so they flare up and marry together slightly over the back; they do not need to be perfect.
  7. Tie in the second hackle, take about three turns, clip the tip, then advance the thread and make the last foam bump.
  8. Tie the foam off, trim the excess, clean up any stray fibres, build a small head and whip finish; reposition and even up the wings with your fingers.
