Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/terrestrial hook, 8-12
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan carapace (2mm foam, layered)
  • Underbody Tan carapace (dubbing or foam)
  • Wing Natural case (elk or deer hair)
  • Rear legs Tan barred rubber legs medium (half foam / half round rubber, knotted)
  • Front legs Tan barred rubber legs medium (1 pair round rubber)
  • Indicator Orange or pink material (foam tab on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, then bind a tan foam strip along the shank to form the abdomen, segmenting it with a couple of thread cuts.
  2. Stack a clump of elk or deer hair and tie it in as a downwing over the body, reaching just past the bend.
  3. Fold a second foam layer forward over the thorax to build the head and bullet.
  4. Add the rear legs, half foam and half rubber and knotted, so they ride high and kick, then figure-8 in a pair of front rubber legs.
  5. Tie a bright orange or pink foam tab on top as a sighter.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add cement to the thread.
