Bubba's Foam Assassin Black

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long dry/terrestrial hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black 70 denier / 6/0

Materials

  • Body/back Black closed-cell foam (2 layers, strip)
  • Underbody Black synthetic dubbing or peacock (small amount)
  • Legs Black/grizzly round rubber legs (2-3 pairs)
  • Indicator Bright poly or foam tab (white/orange) (small tab)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a strip of black foam at the bend to form the segmented back/body; a second thinner layer gives the double-decked profile.
  2. Dub a sparse black underbody, then pull the foam forward and tie it down in segments to create a couple of clear body segments.
  3. Tie in black/grizzly rubber legs each side at the mid and rear segments for a leggy, buggy silhouette.
  4. Add a bright poly or foam sighter tab on top for visibility, and finish the front foam segment as a small head.
  5. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement.
