Brunette Balanced Leech

Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig/balanced leech hook (60-degree), 8-12
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold or copper slotted tungsten bead (1 slotted tungsten on the extension pin)
  • Pin Steel balance pin (straight pin extending past the eye)
  • Tail Brown permanent marker (marabou plume)
  • Flash Copper flashabou (2-4 Krystal Flash strands)
  • Body Brown permanent marker (seal-type dubbing or wrapped marabou)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a straight pin along the top of the shank with a bead slid onto its front end, then lash the pin down so the bead sits out past the eye.
  2. Start thread and, at the bend, tie in a brown marabou tail one shank length long with a few strands of copper flash.
  3. Adjust and lock the pin so the finished fly will hang perfectly horizontal from the balance point.
  4. Dub or wrap a slim brown body forward, filling to the bead, and pick it out slightly for movement.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead and add cement to the wraps and pin.
