Materials

  • Hook Size 10 (old mustard 3399 used on camera)
  • Thread Black UNI 8/0
  • Tail Darning yarn dyed kingfisher blue
  • Rib Small oval silver tinsel
  • Body Darning yarn dyed kingfisher blue
  • Hackle Natural black and dyed kingfisher blue cock hackle

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread a few millimetres back from the eye.
  2. Tie in a short length of the blue darning yarn at the bend as the tail, not too short, and fluff it out.
  3. Tie in the small oval silver tinsel rib and a length of the blue yarn at the tail end.
  4. Wind the yarn forward in an up-and-down method to make a neat, tight body and tie it off.
  5. Tie in a natural black saddle hackle and a blue dyed saddle hackle together by the trimmed stems, with the black over the blue.
  6. Wind both hackles together down the body for about six turns; there is no front hackle.
  7. Spiral the tinsel rib back up through the hackle in five or six turns to the head.
  8. Tie off, bend and trim the tinsel, whip finish, trim the hackle tips one at a time, and varnish the head.
