Reference Recipe

  • Hook Traditional wet-fly/sea-trout hook (e.g. Mustad 3399), 10
  • Thread Black 8/0 (Uni)

Materials

  • Darning yarn Kingfisher blue-dyed (tail and body)
  • Oval tinsel Small silver (rib)
  • Cock hackle Natural black and kingfisher-blue-dyed (2 (palmered))

How to tie it

  1. Start black waxed thread behind the eye and run it down a few millimeters; remove the waste.
  2. Tie in a tail of kingfisher-blue-dyed darning yarn, not too short, and pick/fluff it out slightly.
  3. Tie in a length of small oval silver tinsel for the rib and a length of the blue darning yarn for the body, binding both down the shank for an even base.
  4. Build a neat, slightly shaped body of the blue yarn back up the shank, leaving a small head space.
  5. Prepare one kingfisher-blue and one black cock hackle (strip and align the stems). Tie them in together at the front (black over blue) and wind them together down the body palmer-style for about five or six turns.
  6. Wind the oval silver rib forward through the palmered hackle (counter-wrapped) to trap and secure it, about five turns, and tie off at the head.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
