Bruised Opal Jig Leech

Materials

  • Bead Blue bead (head turner bead)
  • Tail (marabou)
  • Tail flash Blue holographic flash (a couple of strands of Flashabou)
  • Rib Black ostrich herl (5 mm UV Straggle)
  • Body Opal material (medium tinsel)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a blue head turner bead onto a jig hook and start black thread. Tie a clump of marabou in and bind the butts down the shank, keeping everything smooth so the tinsel has a flat base.
  2. Add a couple of strands of blue holographic Flashabou either side of the tail as accents.
  3. Tie in a length of 5 mm black UV Straggle at the rear, then medium opal tinsel in front of it.
  4. Wind the opal tinsel forward to the bead, covering the thread completely, and tie it off. The bright underbody is the whole reason the fly reads as 'bruised'.
  5. Barber-pole the black Straggle forward over the opal, leaving deliberate gaps so the tinsel flashes between the dark fibers, with one extra turn tight behind the bead.
  6. Tie off, trim close and whip finish.
