How to tie it
Make the eye stalk: clamp the middle of a short section of 85 lb monofilament, melt each exposed end with a lighter and flatten it, put a drop of 5-minute epoxy on each flat and seat a 6mm Orange 3D Dragon Eye; let it dry completely before use.
Start the 12/0 white thread about a quarter of the way back from the jig head, wrap a base and trim the tag, then figure-8 the mono eye stalk in from underneath the shank; whip finish and cement.
Tail Wing, in layers: tie Tan Polar Fiber underneath from the eyes back along the straight shank, Ice Dub Shimmer Fringe Bronze on the opposite side, Yellow Polar Fiber on top behind the eyes slightly longer than the tan, then Brown Polar Fiber slightly longer than the yellow. Build thread, trim the butts around the eyes, whip finish and cement the wraps.
Split the thread, wax both sides, lay in light Orange Ice Dub loosely, twist it into a rope, brush it out and wrap it with a hackle plier back to the base of the eyes, sweeping the fibers back with your fingers each turn; trim and brush.
Mid wing: Tan Polar Fiber underneath slightly shorter than the tail wing, the same on each side, then Brown Polar Fiber on top slightly longer than the tail wing. Trim around the eyes, build thread, whip finish and cement.
Split-thread another loop of Orange Ice Dub, brush it out and wrap it behind and between the eyes, securing in front of them; trim, whip finish and brush.
In front of the eyes tie Brown Polar Fiber on top slightly shorter than the previous wing, Yellow Polar Fiber underneath, then Black Polar Fiber on top; build thread, whip finish and trim.
Take the same thread back behind the eyes and bind all the fibers, top, bottom and sides, with a dozen or so wraps; trim and whip finish.
Fold a single strand of orange crinkle flash over the thread and seat it along each side of the wing, trimmed shorter than the main wing and even side to side; whip finish. Wrap red thread over the white collar, whip finish and cement.
Trim the wing butts sticking out past the eyes on a taper toward the jig head. Start the 18/0 thread in front of the eyes, split-thread Hot Orange Ice Dub, brush it out and wrap it tight, edge to edge, forward to the halfway point; secure, trim and brush.
Front wing: White Polar Fiber underneath slightly shorter than the previous wing, then Black Polar Fiber on top slightly longer than the previous black so the whole fly tapers. Seat a small piece of dyed orange and yellow rabbit strip, hide on, underneath as the throat. Flatten the stems of two Cree hackle tips measured slightly shorter than the longest top wing and seat one each side above the eyes.
Trim wing, stems and rabbit strip on a taper behind the jig head, build thread and whip finish. Cover the white wraps with black thread, whip finish, cement, then mark the parr bars with brown and red permanent marker and add a final coat over the head.
