How to tie it
Slide a 3/32 in brown bead onto a Daiichi 1760 and start olive-brown thread behind it.
Tie in small copper/amber wire for the rib.
Tie in five or six pheasant tail fibers at the bend for a short tail, leaving the butts long so they double as the body.
Wrap the pheasant tail fibers forward to just behind the bead to build the abdomen, going slightly past where you need for a secure tie-off, then trim.
Counter-wrap the wire forward in evenly spaced turns and helicopter off the excess.
Tie in a strip of brown scud back on top, then wrap the thread back over the front of the body to lock it in and to set the wing-case width.
Dub a slightly long-fibered brown thorax with a touch of flash mixed in, leaving a few stragglers.
Pull the scud back forward over the thorax as a wing case, secure with a couple of wraps and trim; darken the tie-off with brown marker if needed.
Whip finish, then brush out the thorax dubbing and push it back to form the legs.
