Brown Olive Nymph

Nymph · Advanced · 1 version

As tied by Geoff Johnston

  • Hook Jig hook, 12-18
  • Thread Camel 8/0 (Uni)

Materials

  • Bead Gold slotted tungsten bead
  • Tail Red game hackle fibres (About the hook length less the bead)
  • Rib Broad UTC wire, hot yellow
  • Abdomen Brown olive superfine dubbing (Thin rope, little and often)
  • Thorax Chocolate brown Ice Dub (Generous, picked out toward the bend)
  • Head Varnish

How to tie it

  1. Slide the slotted tungsten bead on the jig hook. Start the thread behind the bead, wind down the shank and trim the waste. Stop just before the bend.
  2. Take a few red game hackle fibres, align the tips and tie them in as a tail about the length of the hook minus the bead. Shorten the stub.
  3. Tie in the rib wire with one wrap.
  4. Twist a thin rope of brown olive dubbing onto the thread and build a tapered abdomen toward the bead, stopping about two millimetres short.
  5. Rib the abdomen with the wire in evenly spaced open turns. Secure the wire with a few wraps, then cut it off.
  6. Dub a generous thorax of chocolate brown Ice Dub in the gap behind the bead.
  7. Pick the thorax out with a velcro brush and stroke the fibres back toward the bend. Add a little dubbing behind the bead if there is a gap.
  8. Take a couple of wraps, whip finish and varnish the thread around the bead.
  9. Trim any thorax fibres that lie over the abdomen.
