Brown Hackle (Wet)

Wet Fly · Trout · Panfish · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly, 10-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat gold tinsel (2 turns)
  • Tail Red hackle fibers or red floss (short)
  • Body Peacock herl (3 strands)
  • Hackle Brown hen hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 2 turns of gold tinsel at the bend as a tag, then tie in a short red tail.
  2. Tie in the peacock herls, twist into a rope with the thread, and wrap a plump body to the 80% mark. The rope makes the fragile herl fish-proof.
  3. Wind 2-3 turns of soft brown hen hackle.
  4. Sweep the fibers back and whip finish.
