Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 10-12

Materials

  • Tail Dark moose (a few fibers, split)
  • Body Brown drake (yellow-brown) (fine dry-fly dubbing)
  • Wing Dark gray red fox underfur (2 hen tips or turkey flats, upright and divided)
  • Hackle Grizzly + brown hackle (2 dry hackles)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, then tie in a few moose fibers and split them into a tail about one shank length long.
  2. Dub a slim tapered yellow-brown body from the tail forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Stand up a divided dark-gray wing (paired hen tips or turkey flat clumps) and post the bases upright and split.
  4. Tie in a grizzly and a brown hackle in front of the wing.
  5. Wind both hackles together through and around the wing base in the standard Catskill/thorax style, a few turns behind and a few in front.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
