Classic Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / spider hook, down-eye, 14-16
  • Thread claret 8/0

Materials

  • Silk body Claret silk No. 13 (full length of shank)
  • Wing Slip from a starling primary quill, outer side out (optional) (tied low)
  • Hackle Black hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the claret silk from behind the eye to above the barb, then forward two-thirds. The wine-red body is this fly's signature.
  2. Wind a slim claret body over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. If winging, tie a slim low slip of starling primary over the body, no longer than the hook.
  4. Tie in the soft black hen hackle by its tip behind the eye.
  5. Take 1.5 to 2 sparse turns of hackle, secure, clip the stem, stroke fibres back, whip finish and varnish.
