How to tie it
With the bead pushed back, tie the Uni-Stretch gills in. Fold the material over on itself first, because this is a bigger fly and it needs a bigger gill tuft to stay in proportion.
Whip finish, slide the 7/64 gold bead up, reattach the rusty brown thread and start the taper.
Tie brassy sized gold wire in on the near side and wrap it into the bend. On a fly this big the heavier wire gives a more pronounced rib than small wire would.
Capture the dark brown buzzer wrap at the very back, bring the thread up, then tie in medium opal tinsel at the rear too and finish the taper.
Wind the opal tinsel forward first with no overlap, then bring the buzzer wrap over the top of it, again without overlapping, so the opal punches through from underneath.
Rib forward with the gold wire, shooting for seven even turns, tie off, helicopter it out and whip finish a rusty brown thorax.
Trim the gills to two tufts and coat the fly in UV resin. The resin is what lets the opal underbody shine through the brown.
