Brooks' Sprout Midge

Midge · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry, 18-24
  • Thread Black 10/0

Materials

  • Shuck Antron wisp (trailing)
  • Body Thread (slim)
  • Post White foam dot or poly stub (tiny)
  • Hackle Grizzly, 2 turns (around post)

How to tie it

  1. Start black 10/0 thread and lay a fine base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short wisp of Antron at the bend as a trailing shuck.
  3. Wrap a slim, smooth thread body forward to the thorax.
  4. At the 70% mark, tie in a tiny white foam dot or short poly stub standing up as a post. This is your sighter and the emerging-adult trigger.
  5. Wrap a grizzly hackle 2 turns around the base of the post, parachute-style.
  6. Whip finish under the hackle and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it off the post.
