Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL-4XL heavy nymph hook, 4-8
  • Thread Yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Weight Lead (0.025 wire underbody)
  • Tail Brown permanent marker (2 goose biots, splayed)
  • Body Golden brown/yellow material (fuzzy yarn or antron blend)
  • Rib Gold middle (oval tinsel)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed yellow + brown hackle (1 grizzly + 1 dyed saddle, in-the-round collar)
  • Gills Gray flotation (ostrich herl, wound with hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start thread, and wrap a lead wire underbody over the middle two-thirds for weight.
  2. At the bend tie in two brown goose biots splayed into a short V tail.
  3. Bind in the gold oval tinsel rib and a strand of gray ostrich herl, then tie in the golden-brown yarn body.
  4. Wrap the yarn forward into a fat tapered body, stopping at the 75% mark.
  5. Counter-wrap the tinsel rib forward in 5-6 open turns and secure, then trap the ostrich herl alongside.
  6. Tie in a grizzly-dyed-yellow hackle and a brown hackle together and wind them in-the-round so the fibers stick out all around, sweeping some down as legs and gills.
  7. Build a yellow thread head, whip finish, and cement.
