Brook's Sprout

Dry Fly · Emerger · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Emerger/scud hook (Dai-Riki #125), 18-24
  • Thread To match natural (black, olive, dun or trico) 70 denier / 8/0

Materials

  • Trailing shuck Antron or Zelon (short tuft)
  • Body Tying thread or fine dubbing (slim)
  • Post Closed-cell foam (short upright post)
  • Hackle Grizzly or dun rooster (parachute around the post)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short Antron/Zelon trailing shuck at the bend to imitate the trapped nymphal skin of an emerging mayfly/midge.
  2. Build a slim thread or lightly dubbed body forward over the rear two-thirds.
  3. Tie in a short foam post standing upright at the thorax.
  4. Wind a hackle parachute-style around the base of the foam post for 3-4 turns, then tie it off.
  5. Build a small thread head, whip finish and add a tiny drop of cement.
  6. The foam post floats the fly flush in the film while the shuck hangs below, imitating a crippled emerger.
