Classic Recipe

  • Hook Blind-eye or up-eye classic salmon fly hook, 4 and smaller
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Silver twist (as needed)
  • Tail Toucan (1)
  • Butt Black ostrich herl (few turns)
  • Body Flat silver tinsel in three sections, each veiled above and below with Impeyan (monal) pheasant, ribbed with silver twist (full shank)
  • Hackle Impeyan (monal) pheasant (1 collar)
  • Wing Doubled Impeyan (monal) crest feathers and two golden toppings (2 crests + 2 toppings)
  • Head Black herl (few turns)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a silver twist tag over the barb, then tie in a toucan feather for the tail and form a black ostrich butt.
  2. Wind the body in three equal sections of flat silver tinsel; at each joint veil a monal (Impeyan) pheasant feather above and below so the metallic green shows, and rib the tinsel with silver twist.
  3. Wind a monal pheasant hackle at the throat as a green-bronze beard.
  4. Set doubled monal crest feathers over the body for the wing with two golden toppings over the top.
  5. Form a small black herl head and whip finish.
