Legs/Hackle Black hackle (1 hen or starling feather)
Indicator Orange permanent marker (foam or bright poly tuft)
How to tie it
Mount the hook and start thread at the bend, then tie in a black foam strip pointing off the back.
Bind in a hen or starling feather by the tip and dub or wrap 2-3 peacock herls into a plump body up to the 80% mark.
Pull the hen feather over the top and pinch it down, then pull it back and split the fibers to the sides so they become splayed legs (the pull-over hackle move).
Fold the black foam strip forward over the back and tie it down behind the eye to form the beetle shell.
Tie in a small orange foam or poly tuft on top as a visibility indicator.
Trim the foam back to a short head, whip finish under the indicator, and cement.
