Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Peacock ice dub (2-3 herls)
  • Back Black ostrich herl (2mm foam strip)
  • Legs/Hackle Black hackle (1 hen or starling feather)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (foam or bright poly tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend, then tie in a black foam strip pointing off the back.
  2. Bind in a hen or starling feather by the tip and dub or wrap 2-3 peacock herls into a plump body up to the 80% mark.
  3. Pull the hen feather over the top and pinch it down, then pull it back and split the fibers to the sides so they become splayed legs (the pull-over hackle move).
  4. Fold the black foam strip forward over the back and tie it down behind the eye to form the beetle shell.
  5. Tie in a small orange foam or poly tuft on top as a visibility indicator.
  6. Trim the foam back to a short head, whip finish under the indicator, and cement.
