Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 10-14
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Natural case (elk hair fibers)
  • Post White uni stretch (calf tail or synthetic yarn)
  • Body Amber/rust brown material (hare's ear-antron dubbing blend)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed tan hackle (1 dry hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, then tie in a small clump of elk hair as a tail one shank length long.
  2. Stand a white calf-tail or synthetic post upright around the 65% mark and post the base with thread wraps.
  3. Tie in a grizzly-dyed-tan hackle against the post.
  4. Dub a tapered amber-brown body from the tail up to and slightly past the post.
  5. Wind the hackle parachute-style around the post in 4-5 turns, top to bottom, and tie it off under the post.
  6. Whip finish at the eye, clear of the hackle, and add a tiny drop of cement to the base.
