Classic Recipe

  • Hook Single salmon/steelhead iron, 2-8
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Brown hackle tips, tied in a V (2)
  • Body Black-and-yellow variegated chenille (1 strand)
  • Hackle Brown, tied back as a collar (1)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in two brown hackle tips at the bend, splayed into a V about half a shank length long.
  2. Strip the end of the variegated chenille to its core and tie it in at the bend.
  3. Wrap the chenille forward in touching turns to two eye-widths behind the eye. The black-and-yellow 'brindle' banding is the whole trigger on this fly.
  4. Take 2-3 turns of brown hackle as a collar and sweep the fibers back.
  5. Build a small black head, whip finish, and cement.
