Tyer Recipe
Hook 3X long curved shank nymph/dry hook (TMC 200R), #8-20 (tied here on a #12-14)
Thread Brown 70 denier
Materials
Wire Copper, small (One length for the rib)
Natural dubbing (wool or hare), water-absorbing Cream laser dub (A three-inch noodle)
Black squirrel tail Black deer hair (Small stacked clump for the underwing)
Deer body hair (coastal deer) Natural or dyed brown deer body hair (Medium stacked clump for the wing)
Head cement Clear head cement (One drop)
How to tie it
Debarb the hook, mount it, and lay a brown thread base back to the start of the bend, roughly above the hook point.
Tie in small copper wire at the front and bind it back to the rear where the body will start.
Spin a long noodle of cream natural dubbing, use wool or hare rather than a synthetic so the fly takes water, and dub a slightly tapered body from the bend forward to just behind the eye.
Rib the body with five or six firm, evenly spaced turns of copper wire, tie it off up front with a couple of forward wraps and helicopter the tag free.
Take the thread back to the 70% point, stack a clump of black squirrel tail, wax the thread, and tie the underwing in reaching a little past the bend, using one soft wrap around just the hair, then a pinch wrap, then progressively tighter wraps to keep it on top; trim the butts at an angle and smooth the step down with thread.
Brush the underfur out of a medium clump of deer body hair, stack it, and tie it in at the same point with two loose wraps followed by tight ones so the tips end just shy of the length of the squirrel underwing and the butts flare.
Pull the flared butts up in thirds, taking a wrap at the base of each third, then build a thread head underneath them.
Whip finish under the standing butts, then gather them, twist slightly, and trim them square to leave a significant deer hair head; add a drop of cement wicked into the thread wraps underneath.
