Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Owner Mosquito wide-gape, 2 (per Brent's list; a stout wide-gape blob/booby hook)
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 3/0 Semperfli Fluoro Brite

Materials

  • Rainy's round float foam, large Orange foam strip (1 short cylinder (butt))
  • Semperfli Ice Straggle Chenille Sunburst orange (Rear half of body)
  • Semperfli Ice Straggle Chenille Fluorescent orange uv straggle (Front half of body)
  • Ice Wing fibre Pearl UV ice wing fiber (Collar (spun in wire))
  • Wire, extra fine Bright silver wire (1 length (dubbing brush core))
  • Solarez UV resin Clear uv resin (Head coat)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Cut a short length of large orange round float foam and slice it lengthwise about halfway through with a razor blade so it folds over the shank.
  3. Seat the foam saddling the top of the shank, curve facing up, with the tail end hanging off the back for flotation; bind it down front to back into an even body. (Foam facing sideways makes the fly dart off line. Sometimes that's a trigger, but up is standard.)
  4. Tie in the Sunburst orange Ice Straggle Chenille at the rear; wrap the back half of the body in touching turns and tie off.
  5. Wrap the fluorescent orange Ice Straggle over the front half, folding the fibers back with each turn for a full blob profile; tie off with good turns.
  6. Tie in the extra-fine silver wire. Cut a bunch of pearl UV Ice Wing fibre in half, lay it over the thread, close the wire over it and spin it into a dubbing brush.
  7. Wrap the collar brush behind the eye until the UV fibers envelop the front of the fly; tie off the wire and save any leftover brush for the next fly.
  8. Push everything back from the eye, clean up the head, whip finish, then coat the head with Solarez and cure.
  9. Pick out any trapped fibers with a bodkin so the collar flows free.
