How to tie it
Mount the Gamakatsu jig hook and lay a red 3/0 thread base along the shank. Everything from here is tied for a fly that rides POINT-UP. Brent's warning is that plenty of patterns online are dressed as they look good in the vice, then swim upside down on the water.
Add optional lead wire over the shank if you want it deeper; the fly fishes fine unweighted in the shallow mangrove water it was designed for.
Tie in two saddle hackles at the bend, splayed outward, for a tail about a shank and a half long. Barred grey off a cheap saddle is what he uses. The splay is what gives the fly its kicking action.
Add Flashabou over the tail, mostly gold with a few strands of red and green. Keep it sparse; the flash is an accent, not the tail.
Wrap UV Polar Chenille forward to the 70% mark for the body, stroking the fibres back on each turn so it does not bulk up.
Tie a bulky red polar-bear-substitute throat underneath, then a pearl Baitfish Emulator wing over the top and a few strands of pearl UV Ice Wing Fiber over that.
Pack a white Senyo's Laser Dub head, whip finish and brush it out. Fish it tight to the mangroves. The point-up ride is the whole reason it does not hang up in the roots.
