Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Daiichi 1560 nymph, 14 (easily tied 12-18)
  • Thread Gray (head finished in fluorescent pink) 8/0

Materials

  • Mallard flank fibers Natural mallard flank (Small bunch (tail))
  • Semperfli Chadwick's 477 wool Chadwick's 477 (1 strand split from the yarn (body))
  • Squirrel dubbing Natural red fox squirrel (gray) (Small amount (thorax))
  • Semperfli Classic Waxed thread, 8/0 Fluorescent pink utc thread (Head hot spot)
  • Solarez UV resin Clear uv resin (Head coat)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a gray thread base back to above the barb.
  2. Clean the fluff from a mallard flank feather, even up the square tips and tie in a tail one hook-gap long.
  3. Split one strand from the three-strand Chadwick's 477 wool and tie it in over the shank all the way to the rear.
  4. Wrap the wool forward in touching turns for a lightly segmented body to about the 75% point; half-hitch.
  5. Dub the natural red fox squirrel onto the thread (or use a dubbing loop for extra spike) and wrap the thorax; tie off behind the eye.
  6. Pick out the squirrel guard hairs at the thorax and lightly along the body for a buggy silhouette, no wingcase needed.
  7. Switch to the fluorescent pink thread and build a small hot-spot head behind the eye; whip finish.
  8. Coat the head with Solarez and cure.
