Start the brown thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the tie-in point just above the barb.
Tie in a small bunch of golden pheasant tippet fibers at the barb point for the tail, lining up the black bars and letting the fibers flare slightly.
Tie in the light gold wire at the same point and leave it hanging off the rear.
Tie in the Dirty Bug Yarn and wrap a tapered, cigar-shaped body forward, staying well back from the eye. Don't crowd the head. Tie off.
Rib forward with big, wide, evenly spaced wire turns for bold segmentation; tie off and break away the wire.
Take a couple of turns of webby burnt orange saddle hackle, tie off, then pull the fibers down and wrap the thread back over them so they seat as a throat beneath the hook.
Tie a sparse underwing of rusty olive Angel Hair on top. Go light on the flash, just a glint.
Roll the tips of a mallard flank slip together so they curve as one bunch, pinch it on top of the shank, and pull the thread straight up between your fingers to seat the wing on top. Trim the butts along the angle of the hook eye.
Build a neat thread head and whip finish.
Coat the whole head with Solarez and cure with a UV light.
