Tyer Recipe

  • Hook curved nymph hook, 10-12

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Red ('Red Glory'), 7/64 (1)
  • Saddle hackle fibers (tail) Red saddle hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Holographic Flashabou, extra small (rib) Red holographic tinsel (1 strand)
  • Arizona synthetic dubbing (body) Dark hare's ear (small amount)
  • Fine wire (under-collar loop) Silver wire (1 short length)
  • UV2 Diamond Brite (under-collar) Peacock ice dub (small pinch)
  • Partridge hackle (collar) Natural gray or brown partridge hackle (1-2 turns)
  • UV resin (head) Clear uv resin (1 drop)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the 7/64 red tungsten bead on the curved nymph hook and start the tan thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short tail of red saddle hackle fibers at the bend.
  3. Tie in the extra-small red holographic Flashabou rib, taking a turn behind the tail to cover the thread wraps; trim the butts.
  4. Dub a tapered, buggy body of dark hare's ear Arizona dubbing (a dubbing loop keeps it shaggy) forward to behind the bead, wrapping over the tail butts for a smooth taper.
  5. Rib the body with open turns of the red holographic Flashabou, a bright rib that pops in the water, and tie off.
  6. Brush the body out and preen the fibers back so it looks natural.
  7. Tie in a short length of fine wire, spin a small pinch of peacock UV2 Diamond Brite in it, and take a sparse turn or two behind the bead as an under-collar, folding the fibers back. Just a UV glow under the collar, not a takeover.
  8. Tie in a partridge hackle by the tip and take a turn or two for a soft, breathing collar. Keep it sparse.
  9. Whip finish behind the bead and coat the head wraps with UV resin; cure.
