Start the green thread on the size 8 hook and dress the shank.
Tie in the emerald crystal chenille at the bend and wind the body forward to just behind the eye; tie off.
Cut a bunch of coarse moose body hair, comb out the underfur, and stack the tips.
Measure the hair so that, held at the front tie-in point, the tips reach just past the rear tie-off. That overhang becomes a short tail when folded back; tie it in very firmly at the front (a touch of extra thread tension helps) and trim the butts close at an angle.
Tie in a soft brown furnace saddle hackle at the front, then palmer hackle and thread rearward together in open turns to the bend, finishing with the thread hanging at the rear.
Trim the hackle off the top of the body so the shellback can seat.
Pull the moose hair back over the top as a shellback, take a soft turn then tighten at the rear tie-off, leaving the tips as a short tail.
Whip finish at the rear with a long-reach whip finisher and clip the thread.
Trim the hackle along both sides at 45 degrees so the fibers come off the bottom only, side fibers make a shellback fly spin and fish refuse it; coat the shellback and rear wraps with flexible cement.
