Tyer Recipe

Materials

  • Tungsten bead (oversized) Green 'magic' finish (1 (1/8 inch))
  • Lead wire .020 (under bead) Natural lead wire (6-7 turns)
  • Pheasant rump hackle fibers (tail) Iridescent olive/natural pheasant rump hackle fibers (small bunch)
  • Vinyl rib, midge size (body) Olive/green translucent vinyl rib midge size (1 length)
  • Extra-fine silver wire (dubbing loop) Silver ice dub (1 length)
  • Collar blend: 50% Arizona synthetic peacock, 25% hare's ear, 25% UV Ice Dub Olive/peacock ice dub (small amount)

How to tie it

  1. Put the 1/8-inch tungsten bead on the size 12 scud hook, take six or seven turns of.020 lead wire, and slide them up inside the bead to lock it in place; start the olive thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a short tail of iridescent pheasant rump fibers at the bend.
  3. Tie in the midge vinyl rib at the bend, flat side up, and build a slight thread taper along the shank. The thread color shows through the translucent rib, so it sets the body tone.
  4. Wrap the V-rib forward in touching turns for a tapered, segmented body; tie it down very firmly behind the bead.
  5. Tie in a length of extra-fine silver wire and form a dubbing loop with it.
  6. Load the loop with the collar blend (half synthetic peacock, a quarter hare's ear, a quarter UV Ice Dub), spin it, and brush it out.
  7. Wrap a short collar behind the bead and tie off; pick out any overly long fibers.
  8. Whip finish behind the bead and add head cement or resin.
