Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Gamakatsu 6X-heavy salmon hook, tapered loop eye
  • Thread chartreuse 1/0

Materials

  • Mylar tinsel size 12 (underbody) Silver oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Monofilament 12 lb (overbody) Light blue (or clear) monofilament lb (1 length)
  • Polar flash (underwing) Opal mirage tinsel medium (5-6 strands)
  • Super Hair (lower wing) Light green super hair (1 sparse bunch)
  • Super Hair (upper wing) Dark blue super hair (1 sparse bunch)
  • Poly bear or substitute (throat) Red poly bear fibers (small bunch)
  • Molded dome eyes Silver, medium material (2)
  • UV resin (Solarez) Clear uv resin (head and body coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start the chartreuse thread and tie in the length of 12 lb light blue monofilament along the shank, ending where the return of the loop eye stops.
  2. At the front, tie in the silver Mylar dull side up; wrap it to the rear and back to the front for a smooth, even body, and secure with a half hitch.
  3. Wrap the monofilament hand-over-hand forward in tight, touching turns over the Mylar so the silver shows through; tie off at the head. This overbody makes the fly nearly indestructible.
  4. Tie in five or six strands of opal polar flash on top, extending just past the bend, as the underwing.
  5. Tie in a tapered wing of light green Super Hair, then a bunch of dark blue Super Hair over top; take plenty of tight wraps - Super Hair is slippery. Then wrap thread up behind the wing to stack the colors so they stay separated.
  6. Fold a small bunch of red throat material around the thread and tie it in under the shank as a short throat.
  7. Build a tapered head and whip finish.
  8. Coat the head and wing base with thin UV resin so it wicks into the Super Hair, then stick a medium silver dome eye on each side; build resin over and between the eyes and cure.
