Brent's Magic Caddis Pupa

Wet Fly · Emerger · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 2457 curved pupa with 1/8" black bead, barb pinched, 8
  • Thread Fluorescent yellow (chartreuse works) 6/0

Materials

  • Bead Black bead (1/8")
  • Swannundaze Light olive swannundaze (1/16", rib)
  • Body blend UV light olive Ice Dub + 50% chopped green African goat (Body)
  • Collar blend Olive brown Crystal Dub + light olive Ice Dub + 1/3 golden brown Ice Dub (Small pinch)
  • Wire Silver wire (Extra fine and soft, collar brush)
  • Solarez head cement/resin (On the thread)

How to tie it

  1. Pinch the barb, slide the black bead to the eye, and lay a good thread foundation down the shank.
  2. Cut the Swannundaze to a long angled point and tie it in by the tip at the rear, just a smidge around the bend, pulling it back to seat. Half hitch.
  3. Dub the body blend from the rear forward to behind the bead, buggy, not neat; the chopped goat gives the translucency this fly lives on.
  4. Take about three open turns of Swannundaze forward for bold segmentation that tones the bright body down; tie off.
  5. Pluck the body out with a toothbrush and preen the fibers rearward.
  6. Tie in the extra-fine silver wire and spin a small brush with the collar blend. Just a wee bit is needed.
  7. Take a couple of turns of the collar brush behind the bead, tie off the wire, and whip finish, pulling the thread down in behind the bead to tighten everything.
  8. Brush the collar back, then coat the whip finish with Solarez and cure.
