Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Octopus (short shank, wide gape), 2/0
  • Thread Grey 6/0

Materials

  • Schlappen White schlappen (2 webby feathers, paired, tail)
  • Lateral Scale Pearl flashabou (1-2 strands, tail accent)
  • Marabou blood quills White marabou (1 plume, belly)
  • Marabou blood quills Fluorescent yellow marabou blood quill (1 sparse half-plume, accent)
  • Marabou blood quills Grey marabou blood quills (2-3 plumes, top)
  • Marabou Coral/peach (1 short fluffy piece, lower accent)
  • Speckled flash (silver) Speckled silver flash (3 strands per side)
  • Stick-on eyes (Mirage, flat) (2, 5/16")
  • Head cement or Solarez (Over the head/eyes)

How to tie it

  1. Start the grey 6/0 and lay a thread base over the front half of the shank, back to about the midpoint.
  2. Pair the two white schlappen feathers good-sides together, cut them together, and tie them in pinched on top of the shank at the midpoint as the tail. Add a strand of pearl Lateral Scale over the tail.
  3. Take a grey blood quill, pinch off the stiff tip, and tie it in on top so it reaches about halfway to the end of the tail.
  4. Strip one side of a fluorescent yellow blood quill and tie the sparse half in on top, just enough to brighten the fly.
  5. Add another grey plume over the top, staggered slightly forward of the first, shortened a touch so the layers step down.
  6. Invert or rotate to the underside: tie in a white marabou belly (tip removed), measured against the body.
  7. Below that, add a short fluffy piece of coral/peach marabou as a warm lower accent near the head.
  8. Top up the grey wherever it looks thin so the back is even, keeping all tie-downs tight and slim. Small marabou bunches bind tighter than bulky ones. Keep the area right behind the eye clean so a wire or heavy mono bite tippet can be knotted on.
  9. Tie three strands of speckled silver flash along each side, that's all the flash this fly needs. Form a neat grey thread head and whip finish.
  10. Stick a 5/16" flat Mirage eye on each side of the head and coat the head with Solarez or head cement to lock them in.
