How to tie it
Lay a thread base on the shank. Clean and stack a small bunch of gray elk hair and tie in a very short tail at the bend. Loose turns first, then follow back with tighter turns, and finish with a soft gathering turn at the rear.
Tie in the extra-fine gold wire at the rear, then the blue dun grizzly hackle, wet-style.
Wrap the gray/blue dun Antron body forward in fairly loose turns to about the 75% point of the shank.
Palmer the blue dun grizzly forward over the abdomen in nice wide turns; secure with the gold wire counter-wrapped through the hackle and tie the wire off. A little orange thread glinting through the back is fine. It reads as a trigger.
Tie in a few strands of Krystal Flash at the front of the abdomen as an underwing, reaching back to the end of the tail.
Stack a generous bunch of gray elk hair for the wing. Stoneflies carry a big wing. Tie it in at the 75% point with the tips reaching the tip of the tail: take a soft turn, then pull up on the thread as you tighten so the wing stays on top. Trim the butts.
Add a small tuft of white calf body hair over the wing base as an indicator and bind the thorax area down smooth.
Tie in the oversized grizzly hackle at the wing base, dull side forward for a dry-fly set, then dub a heavy thorax of orange Antron up to the eye.
Take about three turns of the grizzly through the thorax for segmentation, tie off, whip finish with the fire orange thread, and add a dab of head cement.
