Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Daiichi 1760 (slightly humped/curved nymph; a straight shank works too), 10
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Seal and Ice Dub blend Golden olive and silver seal with ~20% olive Ice Dub, blended (Body)
  • Elk hock hair (golden; or moose body hair) Golden elk hock hair (1 stacked bunch for shellback and tail)
  • Furnace hackle Furnace hackle (1 feather, palmered)
  • Flex cement or UV resin (Over the shellback tie-off)

How to tie it

  1. Start the brown 6/0 thread and cover the shank with a thread base.
  2. Dub a slim body of the golden olive seal/Ice Dub blend the full length of the shank. Dubbing lets you keep this thinner than the original chenille body.
  3. Clean and stack a bunch of the stiff golden hair. Tie it in at the front with the tips pointing forward, measured so that when folded back the tips will extend just past the bend as a short tail. Bind the butts down close to the body.
  4. Tie in the furnace hackle at the front, slightly oversized or webby is fine, and wind the thread and hackle together back to the bend in open turns, the thread reinforcing the stem as you go. Tie the hackle off at the rear.
  5. Clip all the hackle fibers off along the top of the body so the shellback can seat flat.
  6. Pull the hair back tight over the top as a full shellback and tie it down at the bend so the tips form the tail. Whip finish at the rear.
  7. Trim the hackle off both sides of the body so the fibers come only off the bottom, like legs. A fullback with side hackle won't ride true.
  8. Coat the rear tie-off and shellback with flex cement or resin for durability.
