Brent's Funky Shrimp

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud / shrimp hook, 10-14
  • Thread Olive or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Lead-free wire underbody (optional) N/A (A few turns)
  • Scud/shrimp dubbing (with sparkle) Olive, tan or amber scud shrimp dubbing (Body)
  • Clear scud back (Thin Skin / Scud Back) Clear / olive wing slip (1 strip)
  • Fine wire Gold or copper fine wire (1 strand for rib)
  • Antron / crystal flash (optional legs) Pearl flashabou (Small amount)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and, if weighting, add a few turns of lead-free wire over the shank; start the thread and wrap back around the bend a short way.
  2. Tie in the fine wire rib and a strip of clear scud back at the rear, over the bend.
  3. Dub a plump, slightly tapered, sparkly body forward to behind the eye, keeping it full in the middle like a shrimp.
  4. Pick out some dubbing on the underside to suggest legs, or tie in a few antron strands as a leg beard.
  5. Pull the scud back over the top of the body to form a segmented shell and tie it down at the eye.
  6. Rib the wire forward over the shell back in even, open turns to lock it and create segmentation; helicopter off the excess.
  7. Build a small head, whip finish and cement; trim the shell-back tag.
