Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Sickle-bend octopus, fine wire, 1
  • Thread Fluorescent yellow Standard bonded (not flat, flat thread slips on these fibres)

Materials

  • Semperfli Cashmere Monkey Cream semperfli cashmere monkey (base bunch)
  • Semperfli Cashmere Monkey Orange sunburst (small bunch)
  • Semperfli Cashmere Monkey Fluorescent yellow round braid (very sparse)
  • Predator Fibres Black ep fiber (thin tapered bunch (topping))
  • Semperfli Semperseal Subs Fluorescent red ice dub (small tuft (gills))
  • Semperfli Semperseal Subs, long fibre White laser dub (belly bunch)
  • Dome eyes Silver/black material (2)
  • Solarez Bone Dry UV resin Clear uv resin (on head)
  • Marine Goop Clear head cement (dab per eye)
  • Permanent marker Dark permanent marker (accent)

How to tie it

  1. Start the fluorescent yellow thread on the shank. Use a bonded round thread; flat thread will let these slippery fibres spin.
  2. Tie in a bunch of cream Cashmere Monkey on the shank as the base and underwing, extending past the bend.
  3. Add a small bunch of orange sunburst on top, stacking and blending it into the cream so the colors bleed together.
  4. Add a very sparse strand-count of fluorescent yellow, bright colors take over fast, so trim most of it away.
  5. Split a length of black Predator Fibre, taper the end, and tie it thinly over the top as the back so the lighter fibres show through beneath. Add a subtle accent line along the flank with a marker if you like.
  6. Turn the fly over. Taper the underside fibres, then tie in a small tuft of fluorescent red Semperseal Subs at the throat for gills.
  7. Tie in the long white Semperseal Subs under the shank as the belly, tapered and folded around the bottom corners so it envelops the underside.
  8. Squeeze the fly to set the profile, build a neat thread head, and whip finish.
  9. Coat the head with Solarez Bone Dry and cure. Lay the fly on the table and brush all the fibres down together with a big coarse brush.
  10. Put a good dab of Marine Goop on each side of the head and press on the dome eyes. Once dry, comb the fibres back into the final baitfish profile.
