Start the white thread mid-shank. Tie a few pinfish EP fibres in on both sides for the rear of the fly, then thin and taper the ends by sawing gently along the fibres with an open scissor blade. Never a straight cut.
Add a few strands of yellow Diamond Wing along each side for flash. It is pricey and you need very little.
Begin building the body EP-style: tie each small clump in ahead of the previous tie-in point, angled up/forward, then fold it back over itself so it flares and locks tight to the shank. Start with tan on top.
Add small clumps of the fluorescent green for contrast, pulling any overlong strands out between your scissor blades.
Come underneath with more pinfish gray for the belly, tying into the bottom corners of the shank so each side lays tidy, keeping the shank fully covered.
Add a little more Diamond Wing on each side to brighten the flanks.
Top with baitfish olive in quarter-length clumps: one into each top corner (they will split over the back), and a final longer clump down the middle, tied back so everything blends.
Color the white thread head with an olive marker if you like, tie off, whip finish, and apply head cement or UV resin.
Brush all fibres back with a stiff brush and trim front-to-back, top and bottom, letting the fly's natural shape guide you. The tall, flat-sided profile is the whole point.
At the finishing table, put a dollop of UV Marine Goop on one side and press on a 1/4" eye, pupil slightly forward; let one side dry before doing the other. Optionally add gill or parr marks along a ruler edge with a black marker.
