Hook Gamakatsu octopus (offset), 4
Thread Fluorescent orange 6/0 Uni
Materials
H2O Flash 'n Slinky fibre Gold flashabou (small hank, cut to quarter length)
Semperfli Mirage flash, medium Orange mirror (1 strand per side)
Semperflash Rio Grande Gold blend Bronze/gold semperflash rio grande blend (small topping bunch)
Molded dome eyes Black and gold material (2 x 1/4")
Solarez UV resin Clear uv resin (coat over wraps)
Marine Goop Clear head cement (dab per eye)
How to tie it
Dress the front half of the shank with thread. The slight offset of the octopus hook is a feature. It makes the finished fly dart side to side on the retrieve.
Cut a small snippet of gold Flash 'n Slinky, fold the hank in half and cut, then cut once more so your material is a quarter of the hank length. The finished fly runs about three inches.
Taper one end of the first small bunch with your fingertips and tie it in on top of the shank as the tail, ending just short of the bend. Bind it down solidly.
Keep building the body with small tapered bunches: tie each in just behind the eye, laying it on top and folding roughly a quarter back along each side, then add a bunch underneath for the belly, covering the thread wraps. Goldfish are chunky, so build a deep profile, but use very little material per bunch.
Lay one strand of orange Mirage mirror flash along each side as the lateral line.
Tie a final bunch of Rio Grande Gold Semperflash over the top as the topping, and trim the body to a chunky goldfish shape.
Whip finish, then coat all the head wraps with Solarez and cure with the UV light.
With a bodkin, place a dab of Marine Goop mid-shank on each side and press on the 1/4" black-and-gold dome eyes, keeping them level and matching side to side. Rest the fly on a foam block until the Goop sets.
