Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Togens jig hook, 12
  • Thread Red 8/0 Semperfli flat

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Light pink bead (1, 1/8")
  • Lead wire Natural lead wire (about 7 turns of 0.015, behind the bead)
  • Partridge back/aftershaft feather fibers (tail) Natural mottled grouse feather (small pinch)
  • Uni-Mylar #16 (rib) Copper side out (1 strand)
  • Crystal dub (body) Hare's ear (blended, as needed)
  • UV Ice Dub (hot spot) Pink ice dub (tiny pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the 1/8" light pink tungsten bead, wrap about seven turns of 0.015 lead behind it, and start the red thread behind the lead to lock everything down.
  2. Take a soft mottled feather from the back of a partridge skin, strip a few fibers, and tie in a sparse tail at the bend.
  3. Tie in the #16 uni-mylar at the bend with the blue side facing up, so the copper side shows when it is wound.
  4. Blend the hare's ear crystal dub (a coffee grinder fluffs it nicely) and dub a lightly noodled, buggy body forward to behind the bead. Not too bushy.
  5. Rib with four evenly spaced turns of the mylar, copper side out, and tie off.
  6. Preen the trapped dubbing fibers back out from under the rib with your fingers or a picker. Don't cut them.
  7. Take one tight turn of UV pink ice dub right behind the bead as the hot spot.
  8. Take a few turns of the red thread ahead of the hot spot and whip finish behind the bead.
