Brent's Copper Shadow

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved nymph hook, 10
  • Thread Wood duck (tan) 8/0 waxed

Materials

  • Bead Copper bead (1)
  • Lead-free wire Natural lead wire (about 10 turns, behind the bead)
  • Partridge tail-area feather fibers (tail) Natural speckled partridge tail area feather fibers (1 pinch)
  • Holographic Magnum Flashabou (body) Copper flashabou (1 strand)
  • Wire, extra fine (collar brush) Bright silver (hidden) (3.5" length)
  • Togens Shadow dubbing, chopped and blended (collar) Light shadow (small pinch)
  • UV resin (Solarez) Clear uv resin (1 coat on body)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the copper bead to the eye, wrap about 10 turns of lead-free wire and tuck them behind the bead, then start the thread and take it around the bend.
  2. Strip the fuzz from a stiff speckled partridge feather (the ones from the top of the skin), and tie in a pinch of fibers at the bend so the tail splays nicely.
  3. Bind the butts down, trim, and tie in the copper holographic Magnum flashabou.
  4. Wrap the flashabou from the front to the back and back to the front for even coverage, and tie it off.
  5. Coat the flashabou body with UV resin and cure with the torch/light. Fish will be chewing on this all day, so make it bombproof.
  6. Tie in the extra-fine wire (folded back over itself), lay in a pinch of the chopped, blended Shadow dubbing, and spin a small brush (or use a dubbing loop).
  7. Wrap the brush as a short collar behind the bead so the fibers stand off the shank, and tie off.
  8. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
