Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 403 barbless jig, #12
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead 7/64 inch (1)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (tail and body) Black (dyed) pheasant tail fibers (a few strands)
  • Wire (rib) Gold wire (1 length)
  • Senyo's Fusion Dub (thorax) Rainbow (small pinch)
  • Dry fly saddle, micro barb (collar) Black saddle hackle (1 undersized feather, 2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the 7/64 slotted tungsten bead around the jig bend and seat it against the eye; start red thread and run it to the bend.
  2. Tie in a few strands of black pheasant tail so the tips form the tail at the rear, shortening to a tidy length.
  3. Catch in the gold wire, taking a few extra turns of red thread at the rear so a hint of red shows as a butt.
  4. Wind the pheasant fibers forward as a slim herl-like body up to the thorax area and tie off.
  5. Counter-wrap the gold wire forward over the body for durability and tie off; throw a half hitch.
  6. Dub a spiky thorax of rainbow Fusion Dub behind the bead. Spin it on or use a dubbing loop, and leave it a little wild.
  7. Tie in an undersized black micro-barb dry-fly saddle and take two turns as a sparse collar; push the fibers back so they sweep rearward.
  8. Fill the space behind the bead with bright red thread as a hot collar, whip finish there, and pick out or thin the thorax fibers to taste.
