Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa, #14 (down to #18)
  • Thread Black 70 denier flat waxed

Materials

  • Bead Silver bead (3/32 inch)
  • Semperfli wire (rib) Red, 0.1mm (x-small) (1 length)
  • Flashabou (body) Metallic black flashabou (3-4 strands)
  • Peacock herl (thorax) Natural peacock herl (1 strand, 4 turns)
  • Solarez or UV resin (coating) Clear uv resin (thin coat over body)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the 3/32 silver bead onto the curved hook and mount it; start the flat black thread behind the bead.
  2. Lay the red 0.1mm wire along the top of the shank and bind it down, going right around the corner of the bend to preserve the curved profile.
  3. Tie in three or four strands of metallic black Flashabou and wrap the thread back over them around the bend, then throw a half hitch.
  4. Wrap the Flashabou forward in slightly overlapping turns to the bead so the body shows both black and that silvery metallic sheen; tie off.
  5. Spiral the red wire forward in evenly spaced turns for segmentation and tie off behind the bead.
  6. Apply a thin coat of Solarez over the body, not too thick, and cure with the lamp.
  7. Tie in a strand of peacock herl by the butt and take four turns right behind the bead as the thorax; tie off.
  8. Whip finish behind the bead and add a touch of head cement at the tie-off.
