Hook Owner saltwater, #1 (4/0 down to #2)
Thread White Flat waxed, strong
Materials
SF Flash Blend (mid body/lateral line) Natural craft fur underfur (1 tapered clump, folded and cut)
Polar Flash (lateral accents) Silver/pearl flashtail (a few strands each side)
Palmer chenille, medium (belly support) Fluorescent fire orange (several palmered turns)
SF Flash Blend (top wing) Mackerel (1 tapered clump)
SF Flash Blend or UV blend (belly) White craft fur (1 tapered clump)
SF Flash Blend (topping) Gray sf blend (small piece)
Polar Flash (over topping) Pearl flashabou (a few strands)
Molded 3D eyes Silver, large (1 pair, set in Marine Goop)
Epoxy or resin (head) Clear uv resin (1 coat)
How to tie it
Start strong flat white thread at mid-shank.
Cut a clump of natural SF Flash Blend, fold it in half, cut the fold, and tease the ends so they taper; tie half on the near side and half on the far side at mid-shank so the fly tapers rearward.
Add a few strands of Polar Flash along both sides of that clump as a lateral line, trimming to blend with the taper.
Tie in medium fluorescent fire orange Palmer chenille and palmer several turns forward, this props the following materials out hollow-style, keeping a big profile with little weight.
Cut and taper a clump of mackerel-colored SF Flash Blend for the top wing; tie it in at a 45-degree angle on the near top corner, then fold it over another 45 degrees to the far side so it envelops the whole top.
Cut and taper a clump of white blend for the belly; tie it at 45 degrees under the near side, then spread it across with your thumbnail so it wraps the bottom 45 degrees on each side.
Tie a small piece of gray blend right on top to fill in the back.
Add a few strands of Polar Flash over the topping for a final accent.
Whip finish and coat the head with epoxy or resin.
Set the molded eyes on either side of the head with Marine Goop, let cure, then comb the whole fly back with a soft brush.
