Materials
Conehead Black, 3/16 conehead (1)
Bead (behind cone) Copper, 5/32 bead (1)
Marabou (tail) White marabou (1 nice plume)
Senyo's Laser Dub (body stations) White laser dub (2 clumps)
Ice Wing Fiber (sides) Pearl (green hue) (2 rolled strands)
Poly shimmer (gills) Red poly bear fibers (1 short piece)
Llama wool (bottom) Gray antron (1 short piece)
Llama wool (top) Golden olive llama wool (1 short piece)
Angelina hair (topping) Baitfish metallic green (sparse strand)
Molded eyes 5mm (1 pair, glued with Goop)
How to tie it
Slide the black 3/16 cone onto the hook, then a 5/32 copper bead behind it. The bead centers the weight so the fly swims level rather than jigging; mount and start olive thread behind the bead.
Tie in a plume of white marabou at the rear as the tail with a couple of locking turns behind it; pull out any stiff center stem.
Take a clump of white Laser Dub, straighten the fibers, lay it over the shank at its middle, take a soft turn to envelop the hook, then fold the excess back over itself and bind; whip finish this station and re-attach the thread in front.
Repeat with a second clump of Laser Dub near the front, pushing more of it to the bottom so the underside is fully veiled and the cone hardware is hidden from below.
Roll a strand of pearl Ice Wing fiber between your fingers and tie it along the near side, then repeat on the far side, teasing the ends out to the tail tip for a scaly flank.
Tie a short piece of red poly shimmer under the front as gills, about a gap-length long. Just a hint of a bleeding minnow.
Tie a short piece of gray llama wool at the bottom corners. Fold it over each bottom corner so it rises about halfway up each side, flattening the profile.
Tie the golden olive llama wool over the top the same way, over itself at each top corner so it envelops the back.
Loop a sparse strand of baitfish-green Angelina hair around the thread and catch it in on top as the topping. Keep the flash subtle.
Whip finish, coat the thread ties top and bottom with resin and cure, brush the fly out with a soft brush, then glue a 5mm molded eye on each side with Goop (UV-resistant Marine Goop), pressing them into the material.
