Tyer Recipe

  • Hook HMH small tube, intruder style, Tube fly (size 4 octopus trailing hook)
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Chenille (flare balls) Orange (New Age) (2 small balls, rear and front)
  • Mylar piping (rear flare) Orange mylar piping (1 short piece, unraveled)
  • Schlappen (rear hackle) White, webby (1 feather)
  • Schlappen (front collar) Orange saddle hackle (1 feather)
  • Fine grizzly saddle hackle tips Burnt orange (4 feathers)
  • Amherst pheasant tail fibers (veiling) Natural with bronze tips (1 bunch, distributed)
  • Conehead To suit (1, glued on)
  • Beads and octopus hook (rigging) Salmon/iridescent beads and octopus hook (1 bead, 1 hook)

How to tie it

  1. Mount an HMH small tube on the tube attachment, start orange thread, and lay a base to the rear of the tube.
  2. Wrap a small ball of orange chenille at the rear. This will flare the rear hackle.
  3. Slide a short piece of unraveled orange Mylar piping over the tube behind the ball so the frayed fibers flare out; tie down, whip finish that station, and add a little head cement.
  4. Re-attach the thread at the front of the rear station and tie in a big, webby white schlappen feather; fold it and wrap it as a full, mobile rear hackle over the flare. The webbier the better.
  5. Move to the front of the tube and wrap a second small ball of orange chenille to flare the front materials.
  6. Fold and wrap the orange schlappen as the front collar. Plenty of turns, don't be shy with thread.
  7. Tie in the four burnt-orange grizzly saddle tips one at each 'corner' of the tube (top, bottom, and both sides), extending back over the body.
  8. Tie in a bunch of Amherst pheasant tail fibers with a soft loop and distribute them around the collar as a veiling, working them underneath with your bodkin so they encircle the fly.
  9. Whip finish, apply plenty of head cement front and rear, and push the conehead firmly onto the front of the tube, trimming the tube flush.
  10. To fish: run the leader through the tube, add a bead, and snell on an octopus hook.
